Smart Cities

The creation, accumulation and diffusion of knowledge are processes at the heart of technological change and economic growth. Scientific and technological expertise acquired in the past strongly determines future development opportunities, but also sets limitations in this regard. While this applies universally, regardless if considered at the personal, corporate, or spatial level, it is of particular interest in the context of cities and regions given that these entities serve as containers of unique knowledge pools. Guided by evolutionary principles and advanced spatial analysis approaches, and paired with multi-dimensional datasets, this research pillar aims to open up a new research frontier in science and technology studies, as well as to support the development of new planning and forecasting tools for progressive strategic innovation policies that translate in wide-spread advancement and prosperity.

Projects

Connecting Nature

Connecting Nature is a consortium of 30 partners within 16 European countries, and hubs in Brazil, China, Korea & The Caucasus (Georgia and Armenia). We are co-working with local authorities, communities, industry partners, NGOs and academics who are investing in large scale implementation of nature–based projects in urban settings. We are measuring the impact of these initiatives on climate change adaptation, health and well-being, social cohesion and sustainable economic development in these cities. We are also developing a diversity of innovative actions to nurture the start-up and growth of commercial and social enterprises active in producing nature-based solutions and products.

iScape

iSCAPE (Improving the Smart Control of Air Pollution in Europe) was a European research and innovation project active from September 2016 to December 2019. The project worked on integrating and advancing the control of air quality and carbon emissions in European cities in the context of climate change through the development of sustainable and passive air pollution remediation strategies, policy interventions and behavioural change initiatives.

REALLOCATE

REALLOCATE transforms streets into inclusive, green, safe and future-proof urban spaces, where communities live and thrive. The project enables researchers, mobility experts,  urban planners and local citizens to collectively re-imagine our cities and redesign how we move from one place to another. REALLOCATE is a four-year project (May 2023 - April 2027) funded by the European Commission that catalyses change in mobility practices. Together with relevant stakeholders, the project team develops integrated and innovative sustainable urban mobility solutions, enabling European cities to exchange knowledge, experiences and ideas, and inspire other cities to replicate and adapt the developed solutions to their own contexts. REALLOCATE is aligned with the climate neutrality goals of the Mission Cities 2030. It supports cities in working towards their net-zero carbon objectives, and accelerates the development of integrated and innovative sustainable urban mobility solutions and  tools for  safe, inclusive and smart cities.
